I became interested in the World Wide Web when I first learned to use the Flash authoring tool (then Macromedia owned) in seventh grade from an enthusiastic elective teacher. Since that first class, I continued to take web design, graphic design and art classes in high school as well as participating in Art Club. After receiving some recognition and awards for my work I decided it a viable career option and applied for enrollment into the School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I).
In November of 2005, I was accepted into the U of I pending graduation from high school in May 2006. Excited, I got more involved in my school’s art program and submitted my portfolio to the College Board AP for 2-D Design and received a 4 out of 5 for my work in designing logos that were used by the Illinois Dance Team Association (IDTA).
My first year of college consisted of foundations classes in drawing, design and art history. Knowing my path was in graphic design with a focus on web design I applied for a student position as a Paraprofessional Designer with the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences' Web Management & Support (WMS) division late my first semester and started working there January of 2007. I closed my freshman year by displaying work in the Foundations Exhibition, receiving a Student Tuition Support Award and recognition for being on the College of Fine and Applied Arts Dean’s List.
After being accepted into the Graphic Design program I continued receiving an increasing tuition waiver through the Student Tuition Support Award in 2008 and 2009.
With more projects necessitating programming knowledge both inside and outside of the classroom I took on a Minor in Computer Science from the consistently Top 5 ranked program in the United States.
In May 2010 with over 3 years web experience with WMS and loads of graphic design, computer science and art studio classes I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and a Minor in Computer Science. A month later after interviewing in both Chicago and St. Louis, I was offered a job as a Web/Interactive Developer at the St. Louis based advertising agency, Switch—Liberate Your Brand where I worked on web sites for Elsevier, Dickies, Rand McNally, Anheuser-Busch, AAIMEA and Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri.
After a year at Switch, I accepted my current position as a Web Developer for TOKY Branding + Design.
